Specimen Procurement Service Center

The Specimen Procurement Service Center (SPSC) offers end-to-end services spanning specimen procurement, processing, preservation and distribution of biospecimens collected for research. The SPSC provides high-quality, clinically annotated specimens, and superior service to the Carle Health research community and other institutions and industry involved in biomedical research.

Services

Our services include:

  • Procurement and preservation of fresh tissue and biospecimens.
  • Access to bio banked Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks.
  • FFPE slide preparation and H&E staining.
  • Phlebotomy.
  • Processing whole blood, plasma, serum, body fluid (peritoneal, saliva, etc.).
  • Storage of biospecimens.
  • Shipping of biological specimens both nationally and internationally (International Air Transport Association certified).

Quality

The SPSC follows College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines and the International Society of Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) best practices to maintain all equipment, biospecimens, policies, and procedures to ensure we provide high quality biosamples.

The SPSC has storage capacity for -80° C, refrigeration and ambient temperature storage. All temperature storage is continuously monitored using the Primex OneVue monitoring system that allow for a quick response to any temperature deviation, ensuring that all biospecimens are protected.

SPSC uses The Biospecimen Specimen Inventory (BSI) software that is HIPAA, HITECH, and CIS compliant, to collect and store patient and biospecimen information. It provides a secure software environment for data entry, storage, requisition, shipment tracking and reporting.

We work closely with the clinical laboratories at Carle, which expands our access and variety, to high-quality human biological material for research studies.

Our Team

Our team includes two medical laboratory scientist and a histotechnologist, all certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Both medical laboratory scientists have earned their Qualification of Biorepository Sciences from the ASCP.  We have years of clinical laboratory experience and follow the highest standards in the biorepository industry to collect and process high-quality samples for accurate results.
